Writers' Player of the Game vs Bourne Braves: Zach Yorke
By: Ben Pope
“The Hawks are hot!!!”
That quote comes from Hyannis first baseman Zach Yorke, right after he helped Hyannis win in walk-off fashion Saturday night. He claims his place as Writers’ Player of the Game.
Yorke played a key role in Hyannis’ 4-3 win over Bourne, going 3-5 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
The Grand Canyon sophomore drove in the Hawks’ 1st run, driving in Cam Smith on an RBI single in the first inning. Yorke faced a similar situation in a key spot in the tenth inning, with Cam Smith on second base as the ghost runner.
After watching a breaking ball go by for ball one, Yorke looked fastball and drove the next pitch down the right-field line for the game winner.
“I knew he’d start me off with some curve or slider….kinda figured he’d come back with a fastball after and I was able to put a good swing on it,” Yorke said about his tenth inning AB.
Yorke gave his coach Drew Ehrhard credit post-game, talking about the message Drew told him in the on-deck circle.
“[Coach Ehrhard] just said, ‘Remember it’s just another at-bat’, so that was my mindset and just stick to my short, simple approach,” Yorke said post-game.
The left-handed slugger has been a stalwart in the lineup for the Harbor Hawks since arriving on July 7th. In eight games with Hyannis, Yorke is batting a cool .467 and has driven in 8 runs.
This is Yorke’s 2nd Writers’ Player of the Game nomination, the first being against this same Bourne team on July 10th.
