Writers’ Player of the Game at Harwich Mariners: Cam Smith

By: Jason Boué

“Well, he’s got a good game every night” – Head coach Eric Beattie talking about tonight’s Writers’ Player of the Game Cam Smith.

He’s not wrong. There’s a reason that Smith is the go-to prediction for Player of the Game in our Parking Lot Previews.

Sunday was more of the same for the star third baseman as he went 3-4 with a triple, a run and an RBI to his name. It’s no surprise that he’ll be representing the West Division as a starter in this year's All-Star Game.

“I’m just sticking to the same approach [at the plate],” Smith said. “It’s working pretty good.”

“Pretty good” might just be the understatement of the century. After a quiet start to his time on the Cape, which, at this point, feels like forever ago, Smith has established himself as Mr. Consistent. Following tonight’s game, Smith is slashing .328/.392/.552 with four home runs and 14 RBIs. His three-hit performance tonight also pushed his hitting streak to 12 games and his on-base streak to 22 games.

“He’s gonna be pretty dependable,” Beattie said. “He’s a really good player… he does things right.”

The plate is not the only place where Smith makes an impact. He has shown off his defensive prowess plenty this season over at the hot corner, but he had no opportunities to flash the leather tonight. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t ready.

“When you’re not looking for the ball, this game will come at you real quick,” Smith said. “The ball will find you.”

Most of the time though, Cam Smith finds the ball first, making the other team pay in the process.
