Writers’ Player of the Game at Falmouth Commodores: Brody Donay

By: Jason Boué

It would take someone with, as Harbor Hawks general manager Nick Johnson put it, “goliath power” to hit a one-handed home run in the Cape Cod Baseball League. Monday’s Writers’ Player of the Game has goliath power.

In the top of the first inning against the Falmouth Commodores, Brody Donay sent one to straightaway center for his fourth home run of the season, this one a two-run shot to give Hyannis an early lead.

“I didn’t think that it was gone,” Donay said. “When [the umpires signaled] home run, I went ‘oh, okay’… It didn’t feel too great off the bat but it’s kind of cool it still went out.”

Donay is no stranger to the long ball. He hit 12 home runs while at Virginia Tech and immediately began showing off his power once on the Cape. At the preseason showcase at Fenway Park, he was sending the ball to the same bleachers as Red Sox greats. At the CCBL All-Star Game, he hit the longest home run (408 feet) in the Home Run Hitting Contest. Goliath power.

As Hyannis prepares for the playoffs, Donay recognizes that there are still adjustments to be made. Displaying this power more consistently could pay dividends come post season.

“[I need to] see balls deeper… I’m still trying to figure everything out and go from there… keep doing damage.”
