Writers’ Player of the Game at Chatham Anglers: Brandon Eike

By: Jason Boué

It’s not easy joining a Cape League team with two weeks left in the regular season. Brandon Eike doesn’t care.

Tuesday’s Writers’ Player of the Game has settled right in, showing off on both sides of the ball from the get-go. Chatham just happened to be the ones with front-row tickets to that experience on July 25.

Eike went 2-5 with a double and two RBIs, as well as a run scored and a stolen base. This performance continued his streak of recording a hit in each of his three games on the Cape, and his slash line is now an impressive .357/.333/.643 (disregard the small sample size – good is good.).

Head coach Eric Beattie has been satisfied with this “good hitter’ as well.

“He’s a grinder,” Beattie said. “A big, strong, athletic kid… He’s got power… good bat speed… hand-eye coordination.”

Eike has shown off in the field as well, appearing at both first and third for the Harbor Hawks. Against Chatham, he manned the cooler corner, making a few tough plays in the process.

“I’m comfortable pretty much wherever they want me,” Eike said. “As long as I help the team win, I’m happy doing it.”

That mentality and versatility should help Eike remain a consistent force in the Hyannis lineup.

“Any time you can play a lot of different positions it makes you in higher demand,” Beattie said. “It helps him… a lot.”

With performances like Tuesday’s, Eike will surely remain in high demand as Hyannis looks to make a deep playoff run.
