Writers’ Player of the Game at Brewster Whitecaps: Zach Ehrhard

By: Jason Boué

Zach Ehrhard’s quest to turn his season around continues to be successful, and the latest installment of that effort may have been his best outing yet.

Facing off against the Brewster Whitecaps, Ehrhard went 3-5, including a two-run bomb in the top of the ninth to give Hyannis some extra insurance en route to a 7-3 victory.

After starting the season out 0-25 at the plate, Ehrhard has rebounded, with 12 hits, five RBIs and nine walks in his last 11 games. His improved performance at the plate combined with lockdown defense has turned him into an everyday starter for the Harbor Hawks.

“I feel like I’m finally starting to hit a groove,” Ehrhard said. “I’ve been working really hard trying to get my swing down… I’m feeling a lot more confident and trusting myself a little more at the plate.”

Tonight’s three-hit game raised Ehrhard’s average to .211, a number that figures to keep climbing if he keeps this newfound consistency up.

“Zach’s pitch selection and his strike zone awareness is very noticeable,” manager Eric Beattie said. “We all knew he would [figure it out] … His bat and speed really make him a big-time threat.”

Ehrhard wasn’t on his own to solve his struggles, however. His older brother Drew, who played for Hyannis in 2022, is now on the coaching staff. Zach credits Drew for helping him work through his early season struggles, focusing primarily on mechanical adjustments.

“It’s nice to have a familiar face around… to help me and look out for me,” Zach said. “It makes the experience even better than it could have been.”
